Social Development Adviser

The United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) is working with the Pakistan government, other donors, civil society and the private sector to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through support that is consistent with the Government of Pakistan's Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). The UK and Pakistan signed a 10 year Development Partnership Arrangement (DPA) in 2006 that envisages a transformation in the way in which the UK works with Pakistan to reduce poverty, based on mutual principles of commitment to poverty reduction , improved financial management and respect for human rights. UK development support for Pakistan is expected to double from its current level of L80 million per annum. A new Country Assistant Plan (CAP) for 2008-2012 is currently being prepared.

It is envisaged the Social Development Advisor will work on programme interventions, including: direct poverty reduction initiatives; enhancing access by the poor to public voice, accountability, assets employment and livelihoods opportunities, social services (including social protection); and on policy reforms (including gender and government devolution etc)

Experience, skills and knowledge required

The candidates should have a minimum of a post-graduate in a social science discipline. A minimum of 5 years experience is required  of engaging with government and / or civil society in Pakistan as is knowledge of poverty, exclusion and development issues in Pakistan and an ability to apply this knowledge.

A commitment to effective working within multi-disciplinary teams is essential. Candidates should demonstrate effective verbal and written English skills, full competence in spoken Urdu, and have good basic skills with common IT packages, e.g. MS Word , Excel, email, use of the internet etc.
